This song is written from the perspective of someone who has lived a hard life with a close friend that walked that same path but didn't live through it. One person was able to get out of the life by finally hearing the voice of the Lord and getting right with God. The other was not so fortunate. The friend that lived is grieved by the news of their friend's loss and wishing that they could have made it out together. However, the hope is that maybe God's mercy and grace would find that person in heaven. Maybe he/she had a chance to repent and God had mercy. Maybe not...

People who are caught up in drugs and other destructive behaviors still have a yearning for that which only God can satisfy.
